Tailored Home Page completed

The list of the most recent questions asked doesn't seem very useful given the range of topics contained in stackoverflow. Since a user is most likely not well-versed in all the categories that are being discussed, much of the home page ends up being "noise."

Perhaps this list could be automatically tailored to a user's interests based on the tags of questions they've posted or responded to. If not this, then some other way of tidying up the "clutter" would be nice.

Sounds like people are still doing workarounds to actually use this feature. Perhaps there's something left to be improved?

I wrote a GreaseMonkey script myself that adds a button next to each tag in the "Related tags" listing, adding "-tag" to the URL when clicked. That way I can more easily exclude any tag I like and simply bookmark the result and never see those tags again.

I kinda worked around this by setting up an RSS feed with a big "or" of the tags I'm most interested in, but having this automated for the web interface would be very nice.

make so that if you fill out in your profile which tags you are and aren't interested, your default tab then changes to "My Tags".

Extra points if you allow me to filter the hot, newest, votes, etc.. under the "My Tags" tab.

I wouldn't want to miss the action in the standard hot and newest tab, so don't filter all for me outside the my tags tab.

I would like to be able to tag tags and then see what tags are under those super tags, and then see what is under those sub tags.

Of course StackOverflow can make it more convienient, but I just go to the tags section of my profile page, and then click on the tags their that are conveniently sorted in a decreasing order of times participated.

The other thing is that it took a few days to stumble onto that mode of accessing questions, and furthermore, I wouldn't be surprised if there's an even better way that I'm missing.

Idealy for me would be a page consisting of only questions from a few tags I select.

i like the idea of the home page knowing what i've posted about, but i also want the ability to add tags to what gets displayed on the home page.

Dividing the home page into a few sections, containing all new unanswered questions, most popular questions, and combinations of those options with tag constraints, would make a much more interesting and ultimately useful home page.

Absolutely. I've accomplished this by subscribing to the RSS feeds for the tags I'm interested in, but it would be nice if the site did this for me. An added bonus would be a sidebar with updates to questions I've posted or responded to.

If I could give this one feature all of my votes - I would. As SO's popularity increases (as it surely will), its going to suffer increasingly from an "information overload" problem. This kind of tailoring, which I would guess should be simple enough to implement as your tags are already shown on your user page, will become increasingly necessary.

I don't care if it's smart enough to customize for me or if I have to manually name the few tags of most interest, but something would be really helpful.

    Re: viewing only specific tags.

I got around this by bookmarking the pages with the tags I follow and going to the bookmarks instead of the home page. Inelegant but effective.

Would like to be able to tailor the list presentation down to essentials, similar to the compressed link reddit style -- more information can be provided in a mouseover infopop.

  14. 3 Default-avatar

The homepage contains way too many questions with tags I don't care about. Not in the rude sense, just not interested in. I think a "filter out" would be better so that as new tags come online we're not at risk of missing items.

A compromise for the above comments would be:
Change nothing, just add a 'my tags' tab which display questions filtered with my favorites tags (to be defined/selected in my profile)
On could also image a "filtered tag mode" where all existing tabs display questions with the relevant tag. Without this mode, the tabs display the exact same thing than they always do.

Took me 5 minutes on the site to yearn for "tailoring". Navigating between global and tag filtered is a real pain. Solution does not need to be as intelligent as described in the suggestion though. Just let me select a list of tags to include or exclude (or some tag bundles I can select). Once I am in that "mode", I expect to navigate the whole site and the tags would filter everything I see.

I would like the list to be simpler - eg just the title - allowing for more to be seen at once - currently I can only see 4 or 5 questions on my screen at once , so being able to see more at once would help me find what is appropriate to me.

I think it would be kind of cool for the system to intelligently build a list (with an interaction count) based not only on the tags of questions I've posted/responded to, but also tags I've explicitly searched on (there are tags I've searched on, but never posted/responded to). On my profile page I would then have a good selection to choose a favourite set from.

Agree, in fact I would argue the current home page is not very useful. And it will only get worst as the topics get larger. I think SO should have 2 HP; for user looking for answer and user wants to contribute. Kinda like google and google/ig. The later should work like google/ig where user can create personal page and choose tags. All tabs (Newest, Hot, Votes etc) also based on selected tags

I really want a way to explicitly register my interest in a set of tags, so I can quickly find new questions asked with those tags.
