Offer OpenID registration directly through stackoverflow
Partner with another OpenID provider to make the signup easier so that people who don't really grok OpenID can just make an account *directly on stackoverflow* and get one magically. That way all the OpenID newbies will be using one without even knowing that they should be hatin'.
I believe based on our new one-click login page, and the participation of Google, Yahoo, and (soon) Microsoft, this is now moot.

JanRain's MyOpenID allows sites to use the myopenid backend, but have it branded as another site. Should be an easy thing to implement here. http://www.janrain.com/products/opx

Putting this here because it is important:
http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2008/10/stack-overflow-openid-case-study/#comment-7670Don't allow people to edit the url if they choose a prebuilt one. I thought I had to and spent five minutes knocking my head against the while like Andrew did.

@clively: sort of. It would be more correct to say that with OpenID _only one_ web site owner (whom you presumably trust) has access to your actual user credentials. If you don't already have an OpenID and want to use StackOverflow, then you should have the option to make StackOverflow be that site.

Not really. See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/181337/how-can-i-allow-users-to-create-openids-from-my-website
I think you misunderstand the suggestion.

This kind of goes against what OpenID is about. Namely, that the website owners do not have access to your actual user credentials.
